The town of Ossining started out as a village named Sing Sing, inhabited initially by the Mohegan Tribe of Native Americans. In 1685, the Native Americans sold their land to Frederick Philipse, a Briton. The land that now makes up the town of Ossining stayed in the Philipse family until the American Revolution, when it was confiscated by the New Yorkers. In 1813, Sing Sing was incorporated.
As the village grew, the name was changed to Ossinsing at the advice of a Native American authority, but eventually the third "s" was dropped because it was difficult to pronounce. The village itself kept the name Sing Sing until a nearby prison developed a bad reputation for convict labor in 1901. To distance itself from the prison, the village also adopted the now ubiquitous Ossining.
Ossining, NY, is the home of a few small festivals: the Harvest Festival, in late October, and St. Augustine's annual Italian Festival. This festival takes place in mid-July at St. Augustine's church. Celebrating Italian food, wine and culture, the festival also features casino games and plenty of activities for children. | |
