Curry Subaru in Cortlandt Manor, NY, attracts customers from a number of surrounding cities and communities seeking new and used cars, including Peekskill, NY, perhaps best known as the fictional setting of the popular '80s sitcom The Facts of Life.
In reality, Peekskill is a vibrant community that is home to more than 23,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and is located about 50 miles north of New York City in Westchester County. It was first incorporated as a village in 1816, was further incorporated within the Town of Cortlandt in 1849, and became its own city in 1940. The city has a total area of 5.5 square miles, of which 1.2 square miles is water. Its downtown area has been revitalized in recent years by an influx of local artists that were actively sought by the city.
Following the successful model of Lowell, MA, Peekskill reimagined itself as an artists' community in the early 1990s as a way to combat its dwindling population. The city took out ads in SoHo art magazines offering displaced artists low interest rates to move to the city and inhabit gallery and loft space. Today Peekskill has a thriving art community. Local highlights include the Paramount Center for the Arts, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, STUDIO No. 9 Gallery and Workshops, and the Peekskill Coffee House.
Peekskill is also the birthplace of a number of notable people, including actors Mel Gibson, Paul Reubens and Stanley Tucci, former New York Governor George Pataki, and controversial Hare Krisna guru Kirtanananda Swami, who graduated with honors from Peekskill High School in 1955 as Keith Gordon Ham. NBA forward (and 1999 #1 draft pick) Elton Brand and former NFL lineman Tre' Johnson are also alumni of Peekskill High School. The first African-American mayor in the state of New York, Richard E. Jackson, served Peekskill from 1985 to 1991.
Peekskill is also the location of Eastland School for Girls and Langley College, the fictional schools attended by Blair, Jo, Natalie and Tootie on The Facts of Life, the popular NBC sitcom that ran from 1979 to 1988. A recent TV movie, The Facts of Life Reunion, featured the characters reuniting in "Peekskill" with Mrs. Garrett for the Thanksgiving holiday.
